A couple years back I ran a game of Spirit of the Century, a 1920's pulp adventure role-playing game, for my gaming group, and created art to go along with their adventures. This is the art, and a brief rundown, of the adventure I called:
The adventure started in the Smithsonian, where the Centurions had been invited as guests of honour to the opening of an exhibit on artifacts from the lost tomb of King Neferkhamen, which the party had discovered in a previous session. The mummies, of course, came alive.
After the mummies were subdued, a pair of hooded figures were seen absconding with the Eye of the Maharajah, the world's largest sapphire (previously stolen from a deposed prince and then donated to the museum by Eliza Fitzgerald, the Centurion's resident cat burglar). Clearly the mummies were merely a distraction! A car chase later, the hooded pair were followed to an airfield, just in time to see them get into a biplane and take off. A clue they had picked up at the museum led the party to believe the plane came from the lost island of Santa Tirano, located where else but smack dab in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.
The party commandeered a plane of their own and after Jackie Target, the amnesiac secret agent, had the memories of her pilot training reawakened through hypnosis, they departed for Santa Tirano. Approaching the island was fraught with danger. Ever since a volcanic eruption at the turn of the century, it had been lost in a thick fog which played havoc with navigational instruments. Luckily Felix Faust, the Century Club's resident mystic, dug through his bag of arcane relics and pulled out the mummified ear of Marco Polo. After whispering into the ear, Felix heard a voice whisper back, navigating them safely through the clouds. He was also left half-deaf, but those are the dangers of playing with powers beyond human comprehension.
The Centurions arrived at Santa Tirano. At the very center of the island they saw an enormous volcano, frozen mid-eruption, the long magma streams crystallized into solid glittering forms. They landed the plane on the beach and headed into the village, where a crowd stood in front of a palace. On the central palace balcony, overlooking the crowd, they saw...
THE CRETACEOUS PERIOD: After being caught in the blast of an asteroid strike, a T. Rex was bombarded with fragments of a strange crystal from outer space. The shards spread throughout his body and began to resonate at the same frequency as his cells. Since that day, he has been unable to die. He has spent millions of years honing his mind, studying the effects of resonant frequencies and crystal harmonics to better understand what is keeping him alive. These days, he's the despot ruler of an island nation.
Ressur-Rex bellowed to the crowd, detailing his plan to use the Eye of the Maharajah's unique resonant frequency to crystallize the magma of the Earth's core, plunging the planet into an eternal ice age. Being permanently frozen for all eternity is the closest Rex will ever get to death, the one thing that has eluded him for eons.
After the speech, the Centurions broke into the palace and found a tunnel that led deep into the frozen volcano. They followed it to a huge, spherical resonance chamber Rex was using to amplify the sapphire's harmonics. They confronted the dinosaur and while the rest of the party kept him occupied with a fight, Eliza managed to wrestle the jewel from its pedestal. The chamber began to shake and crumble to pieces around them. The Centurions escaped the room just as it collapsed, plunging everything within, including Rex himself, into a magma-spewing chasm below.
